Job Description Summary The Lead Manufacturing Engineer will support the design, sourcing and manufacturing of complex aerospace machined components and assemblies for Edison Works Next Generation Products, from concept through full-rate production. The role improves producibility, supports manufacturing readiness and reduces cost. It needs strong knowledge of conventional machining. The engineer helps make designs producible early in the design cycle and helps move machined hardware into robust production processes at internal GE shops and external suppliers. Job Description Roles and Responsibilities Leads efforts with Design Engineering to apply "Design for Producibility" to new machined parts, tooling and assemblies, using knowledge of conventional machining processes: turning, milling, drilling, grinding, broaching, shaping and sawing. Takes part in producibility and design reviews. Reviews part drawings and GD&T for machinability and recommends design changes that lower cost and risk, such as tolerance stack-ups, datum strategy, feature access and material removal. Provides detailed should-cost and lead-time estimates for machined components, assemblies and tooling. Assists Edison Works Supply Chain in program reviews so that machining considerations are addressed, from purchase order through hardware delivery. Proactively engages outside vendors (OV) and internal machine shops so that program cost, quality and delivery metrics are met as hardware moves from prototype to production. Creates manufacturing schedules and evaluates supplier routers and machining process plans. Develops process methods, operation sequences, workholding and fixture concepts, CNC programming needs and inspection plans for assigned machined hardware. Uses working knowledge of machine shop capability (equipment, capacity, tolerances) to help decide on processes and suppliers. Supports supplier evaluation, process development, first article and production readiness. Carries out assigned machining technology projects and contributes to technology roadmaps and Manufacturing Readiness Level (MRL) milestones. Uses judgment to make decisions and solve moderately complex machining problems. Spots risks such as machining-induced distortion, dimensional conformance, surface finish and process capability, and supports structured problem solving to reach rate. Takes a new perspective on existing solutions and uses technical expertise and data analysis to support recommendations. Draws on multiple internal sources and limited external sources outside own function to make decisions. Acts as a resource and mentor for less experienced colleagues. May lead small projects with moderate risks and resource requirements. Supports integrated schedules and communications with DoD customers and stakeholders. Explains difficult or sensitive information and works to build consensus. Is developing the persuasion skills needed to influence others on topics within the field.
